Unit 2- Session 1- Civil and Human rights issues

Session 1- Introduction

In today’s time, everyone has the right to work at Taco Bell, for the NBA, or Washington DC, regardless of what they look like or where they came from.  This was not always the case.  Throughout the history of America, citizen and immigrant rights have become greater at times and stricter during others.  Legal rights are expanded when people join together and fight long and hard for a common cause.  In the history of the United States, groups defined by ethnicity, age, gender, religion, and labor have worked to change laws and expand their rights in this country.

Vocabulary 2.1- Human rights, Civil rights, Oppression, Segregation, Progressive movement, Suffrage, Jim Crow, Lynching, Affirmative action, Muckrakers, Trust (similar to monopoly)

Assignment 2.1.1:

First think, and then write about an area where civil rights should be expanded (freedoms gained) or contracted (freedoms lost) today.

Second, defend why you think so. Be sure to state clearly whether rights are expanded or contracted.

Minimum: one paragraph

For example, I believe the age to legally drive should be 18 instead of 16.  It is a good idea to take away the freedom of a16 year old to drive because they are too dangerous.  Drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 account for almost 25% of traffic accidents.  By constricting the right to drive at 16 we would be granting the right of safer roads to the 90 percent of other drivers 18 and over.
